Everyone wants their freshly cut tulips to last as long as possible in the vase. When choosing tulips at a flower shop, look for blooms that have not yet fully opened. That way the flowers will only open after a few days in the vase, giving you enjoyment for much longer.
If you are cutting tulips from your own garden, do so early in the morning and choose stems with buds that are still tightly closed but have already taken on their colour. Always use a sharp knife rather than scissors — scissors can crush the vital water-conducting channels inside the stem. Another option, of course, is to have flowers delivered: you can order tulips from us online and have them brought straight to the door.

If you buy tulips directly from a flower shop, wrap them in a damp paper towel or cloth so they do not dry out on the way home. When you choose our tulip delivery service, we take care of proper packaging so your flowers arrive as fresh as possible.
Before placing tulips in a vase, trim about one centimetre off each stem with a sharp knife. Cut straight across rather than at an angle — a flat, clean cut allows the tulip to draw up as much fresh water as possible.
Also remove any leaves that would sit below the waterline. Leaves submerged in water can interfere with the flower's ability to absorb nutrients. The fewer leaves the tulip has to support, the more energy it can put into its bloom.

Tulips continue to grow after they are cut. For that reason it is important to use a vase that is tall and slender. As the blooms open they become heavier and the heads will begin to droop, so choose a vase that is roughly two-thirds the height of the flowers to give the stems proper support.
A dirty vase is the most common reason tulips have a short vase life. Even tiny residues left over from a previous bouquet provide the ideal breeding ground for bacteria and rot. Always clean the vase thoroughly with hot water before use.

Tulips in a vase need considerably more water than flowers growing in a garden. Top up the vase with fresh water every day — cold tap water works best and keeps tulips fresh and healthy for longest. Avoid warm or hot water. Florists and flower delivery services also offer cut-flower preservatives: these preparations contain specific nutrients for tulips and, when mixed into the water according to the instructions, help extend the life of the flowers even further.
Tulips stay at their best in a bright but shaded spot away from direct sunlight. Keep them out of cold draughts and well away from radiators. Tulips are especially happy if they can spend the night somewhere cooler, at a temperature of around 12–15 °C.

Tulips and daffodils should never share a vase. Daffodil stems release a sap that can block the stem of a tulip, preventing it from absorbing water and nutrients properly. Tulips last longest when they have a vase entirely to themselves.
Tip: tulips should also be kept well away from ripening fruit such as apples, plums or peaches. Keep the vase away from fruit bowls, because ripening fruit releases ethylene gas, which speeds up wilting in tulips.
